Xu Zhimo: A Talent across East and West

Xu Zhimo (1897-1931) was a renowned Chinese poet, essayist, and translator, whose work has left an indelible mark on Chinese literature. Born in Zhejiang Province, Xu was the son of a prominent scholar and official. His early education was traditional, but he was also exposed to Western ideas through his family’s connections.

In 1915, Xu entered Tsinghua University, where he was deeply influenced by the New Culture Movement. He began to write poetry and essays, and his work soon gained attention. In 1921, he traveled to the United States, where he studied at Columbia University. During his time abroad, he was exposed to a wide range of Western literature and philosophy, which profoundly influenced his writing.

Xu returned to China in 1923 and quickly became one of the most influential figures in the literary world. His poetry was known for its lyrical beauty and emotional depth, and he was a leading figure in the modern Chinese poetry movement. He also translated a number of Western works into Chinese, including plays by Shakespeare and novels by Tolstoy.

In 1928, Xu married the Englishwoman廖梦醒 (Liao Mengxing), which was a bold and unconventional move at the time. The couple traveled extensively together, and their marriage was a source of inspiration for many of Xu’s later poems.

Tragically, Xu’s life was cut short at the age of 34 when he was killed in a plane crash in 1931. Despite his short life, Xu’s legacy continues to resonate with readers around the world.
