Act 1: Introductions and Misunderstandings
Scene 1: The Johnson Home
Characters:
- Jay - A gay African-American man who is the family patriarch.
- Gloria - Jay’s wife, a Colombian woman who is a stay-at-home mom.
- Manny - Their teenage son, a proud Mexican-American.
- Claire - Jay’s sister, a strict Chinese-American pediatrician.
- Luke - Claire’s son, a clumsy, athletic boy.
- Mitchell - Jay’s gay brother, a Jewish lawyer.
- Cameron - Mitchell’s husband, a WASPy financial advisor.
(The family is gathered around the kitchen table, laughing and chatting. The doorbell rings. Mitchell and Cameron answer the door.)
Mitchell: (Cameron opens the door) Mitchell: Hey, we have company! Who could that be at this hour?
Cameron: (After a brief moment) Oh, it’s our neighbors, the Smiths. They wanted to drop off some cookies.
(The Smiths, a white couple, enter the kitchen. They are greeted warmly.)
Jay: Welcome, welcome! Come in and join us. I was just making a pot of coffee.
(Gloria is in the kitchen preparing snacks.)
Gloria: ¡Hola! How are you all today?
Mrs. Smith: Hola! We’re great, thanks. We’ve heard so much about you all from our kids. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
(Suddenly, the phone rings. Jay answers it.)
Jay: (Holding the phone) Oh, it’s the school. They’re calling about Manny. It seems he got into a little trouble…
(The scene shifts to the school where we see Manny in trouble for defending his friend from a bully.)
Manny: (Defensively) He was picking on him! I had to do something.
(The principal calls Manny’s parents. Jay and Gloria rush to the school.)
Jay: (Manning the phone) Yes, we’re on our way. Thank you, Principal.
Gloria: I can’t believe this. Our son, in trouble?
(They arrive at the school and meet the principal.)
Principal: Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, I’m sorry for the trouble. Manny acted out of defense, but we need to talk about it.
Jay: (Grasping the principal’s arm) Talk? You’re going to talk to me about what? My son is defending his friend. He’s done nothing wrong.
Gloria: (Emphasizing) We are here to support him, not to judge.
(The principal looks taken aback by their strong stance.)
Act 1, Scene 2: Cultural Conflicts
(Back at the Johnsons’ house, the tension remains high. The Smiths, still present, attempt to lighten the mood.)
Mrs. Smith: I must say, Mr. Johnson, you have quite the family.
Jay: (With a chuckle) Yeah, we’re a mess, but we’re family. Isn’t that what matters?
(The doorbell rings again. This time, it’s the Camdens, another neighboring family.)
Camden Dad: Hey, Jay! We heard about the trouble at school. Want to talk about it over a beer?
Jay: Sure thing. Come on in.
(The Camden family enters. They all seem friendly, but there’s an undercurrent of awkwardness as they try to integrate with the Johnsons.)
Claire: So, we’re here to support our son. But it seems like we’re all here for different reasons.
Luke: Exactly. It’s like we’re all on different teams.
(As they talk, the doorbell rings yet again. This time, it’s the Kim family, another diverse family in the neighborhood.)
Mrs. Kim: Hi there! We’re the Kims. We’ve heard so much about you all from the kids. It’s great to meet you.
Jay: Great to meet you, too. This neighborhood is becoming a melting pot of cultures.
(The Kims are warmly welcomed, and soon the whole group is laughing and sharing stories. The scene closes with the Johnsons and their neighbors forming a makeshift support group for Manny.)
Act 1, Scene 3: Reflection and Unity
(Back at the Johnsons’ house, the family sits together.)
Gloria: We’ve all had a rough day, but remember, it’s not about us. It’s about Manny.
Jay: Right. He’s going through a lot. He just wants to do what’s right.
Mitchell: And that’s what we have to support him in, no matter what.
Cameron: I think we’ve learned a lot today. That’s what neighbors are for, right?
Claire: Absolutely. It’s about coming together, despite our differences.
(The family nods in agreement. They realize that while they may come from different backgrounds and cultures, their love and support for one another is what truly matters.)
(The curtain falls as the family prepares to support Manny and to learn from the day’s events.)
