Scene 1: The Arrival of Rain

- Chang Tso-lin: The head of the Lu family, a stern and domineering man.
- Yu Hsiu-erh: Chang Tso-lin’s younger sister, a graceful and beautiful woman.
- Hsueh Hsien-fu: The family’s loyal steward.
- Ching-chun: Chang Tso-lin’s young wife, a naive and innocent woman.
(The storm is growing louder outside. Hsueh Hsien-fu enters, followed by Chang Tso-lin and Yu Hsiu-erh.)
Hsueh Hsien-fu: Master, the storm is getting worse. We should prepare for the worst.
Chang Tso-lin: I trust you, Hsueh. I have always trusted you.
(Yu Hsiu-erh approaches Ching-chun, who is sitting alone in a corner.)
Yu Hsiu-erh: Ching-chun, why do you sit alone? Come and join us.
Ching-chun: I am not feeling well. I would rather be alone.
(Chang Tso-lin notices the tension between his wife and sister.)
Chang Tso-lin: Yu Hsiu-erh, why don’t you go and check on Ching-chun?
(Yu Hsiu-erh leaves. Chang Tso-lin turns to Hsueh Hsien-fu.)
Chang Tso-lin: Hsueh, you have been with this family for many years. Do you think there is anything I should know about my family?
Hsueh Hsien-fu: Master, there is nothing I wouldn’t tell you. But some things are better left unsaid.
(The storm reaches its peak, and the electricity goes out. The stage is dark.)
Act II: The Storm Rages
Scene 2: The Heart of the Storm
(The storm has subsided slightly, but the tension remains. Ching-chun enters, followed by Yu Hsiu-erh.)
Ching-chun: I am so tired of this place. I want to leave.
Yu Hsiu-erh: Ching-chun, why do you want to leave? This is your home.
Ching-chun: But I am not happy here. I am trapped in a loveless marriage.
(Chang Tso-lin enters, followed by Hsueh Hsien-fu.)
Chang Tso-lin: Ching-chun, you know that I love you. I want to make you happy.
Ching-chun: Master, I don’t want your love. I want freedom.
(Yu Hsiu-erh speaks up.)
Yu Hsiu-erh: Ching-chun, why do you think you are trapped? Perhaps you just need to open your eyes and see the truth.
(The storm begins to rage again, and the electricity goes out once more. The stage is dark.)
Act III: The Storm subsides
Scene 3: The Aftermath
(The storm has finally passed. The stage is bathed in moonlight. Ching-chun enters, followed by Chang Tso-lin.)
Ching-chun: Master, I have realized that I was wrong. I want to stay with you.
Chang Tso-lin: Ching-chun, I am so happy to hear that. I love you, and I will always love you.
(Yu Hsiu-erh enters, followed by Hsueh Hsien-fu.)
Yu Hsiu-erh: Master, I have also realized that I was wrong. I was jealous of Ching-chun, but now I see that she is a wonderful woman.
Chang Tso-lin: Yu Hsiu-erh, you are a wise woman. I am grateful for your advice.
(The stage is filled with the sound of birds chirping. The play ends with the family gathered together, united in love and peace.)
(The curtain falls.)
