Act I
Scene 1: A rural home in summer
Enter KULIM, a middle-aged man, with a worried expression. He is followed by his wife, MASHA, and their young daughter, NATASHA.
KULIM: (sighs) Masha, I fear for our future. The drought has taken its toll on our crops, and we may not be able to feed our family.
MASHA: (nods) I know, Kuli. But we must stay strong. Our daughter, Natasha, needs us now more than ever.
They walk into the house, where NATASHA is playing with her dolls.
NATASHA: (cheerfully) Look, Mama! I made you a new dress!
MASHA: (smiling) That’s very kind of you, Natasha. But we must think about the future.
Enter IVAN, a young man, who is KULIM’s neighbor. He is carrying a basket of fruit.
IVAN: (greeting) Good evening, Kuli. I brought you some fruit from my garden. I hope it will help you through these hard times.
KULIM: (grateful) Thank you, Ivan. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.
IVAN leaves, and KULIM turns to MASHA.
KULIM: Masha, we must find a way to save our home. Perhaps we can borrow money from the bank.
MASHA: (nods) I will go to the bank tomorrow and ask for a loan.
They sit together, holding each other’s hands, as the sun sets over the horizon.
Scene 2: The same home, the next day
Enter MASHA, looking worried. She is followed by a BANK CLERK.
MASHA: (to the BANK CLERK) I have come to ask for a loan to save our home. The drought has destroyed our crops, and we are in dire need of help.
BANK CLERK: (sighs) I’m sorry, Masha. But the bank cannot lend you money under these circumstances. The bank is not in a position to take on more risk.
MASHA: (disappointed) I understand. But what will we do now?
The BANK CLERK leaves, and MASHA returns to the house, looking despondent.
MASHA: (to KULIM and NATASHA) I have returned from the bank, and they will not lend us any money. What will we do now?
KULIM: (tries to comfort her) Masha, we must not lose hope. We will find a way to survive.
NATASHA: (cheerfully) Yes, Mama! We will be okay!
They sit together, holding each other’s hands, as the sun sets over the horizon.
